BFW 2013

Hey everyone! In an effort for this post to be relevant (since it’s already almost a week late), I’m going to interrupt our awesome Disney posts with a quick one about last Friday night (and no, I’m not talking about the Katy Perry song).

My wonderful sister-in-law and I made it a girls night last Friday by having dinner at 26 (AWESOME restaurant in the Five Points area of Birmingham…highly recommend it!) and then taking in the Friday night Birmingham Fashion Week show.

BFW is in it’s 3rd year and has become quite the successful venture. I’ve been dying to go since it first began over 3 years ago, but it just wasn’t in the cards. This year, I made it my mission to go. Why? Because the Friday show featured one of my all-time favorite designers, Anthony Ryan Auld, winner of the second season of Project Runway All-Stars and season 9 contestant, as well as Joshua McKinley, runner-up in season 9 of Project Runway.

But before I delve into Anthony Ryan and Josh, let’s talk about the beginning of the show. Before the featured designers showed their stuff, BFW showcased Rising Designers (middle and high school students) and Emerging Designers (college and post-grad students). And can I just say, WOW? I was absolutely floored by some of the design talent in this state. The Rising Designers were tasked with creating a garment out of unconventional materials and they were awesome (think Doritos bag evening dress and a dress made completely of Mardi Gras beads, just to name a few).

What I was really impressed with were the Emerging Designers. There were several collections (4 outfits per designer) that I was already coveting the second they left the runway. Seriously, if you are reading this and you’re the designer, get in touch with me!

My absolute favorite Emerging Designer was Allison Mills. Her collection was so wearable and current (I need that gray/black/white tweed jacket!). I wish her black sequin skirt was a skosh shorter, but that’s neither here nor there.

Another designer I loved was Kelli Druce (or maybe it was Bruce? It was kinda hard to hear the names as they echoed in the tent). Her collection was very Mad Men inspired and I loved it.

Gimme that yellow coat!

After the student designs were shown, we were treated to a local boutique runway featuring the designs of Socca and Theadora. These two boutiques are located in Homewood, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be visiting them soon! We also got to see southern designer Annie Griffin whose collection is sold in over 150 stores all across the county (sorry for the lack of photos for these, I was too busy drooling over them and picking out which ones I wanted! ha!).

Finally, it was time. Time for two of my favorite Project Runway designers to show their stuff.

If you remember Joshua McKinley, the runner-up from Season 9 of Project Runway, he was absolutely loud and crazy while he was on the show, and his collection was no exception.

He even did a somersault at the end of his show! He is cray cray and I love it.

Anthony Ryan showed last, and what else is there to say except his stuff is AMAZING. See for yourself.

BFW 2013 was an experience I will never forget. I look forward to attending again next year! Thanks again to my wonderful sister-in-law for being my “hot date!”
