New Disney Movies 2020

First of all, can we get an “AMEN” for new content this year? It sorta felt like 2019 was the year of the sequel or remake, and I am over it. I can’t wait to see what’s NEW. Disney, Marvel, and Pixar are all bringing you new movie content in 2020. This year’s movie slate will also include pictures from 20th Century Fox as Disney acquired that company last year in a huge, multi-million dollar agreement.

Every movie releasing in 2020 from the Walt Disney Company.

New Movies from Fox

Underwater-January 10, 2020

Kristen Stewart stars in the first Fox film of 2020. Underwater is about a group of researchers at the bottom of the ocean who are terrorized by mysterious creatures after and earthquake almost destroys their lab. This one looks totally creepy, so I’m not sure I’m here for it. Probably a good thriller, though.

Call of the Wild-February 21, 2020

The next film being released in 2020 is Call of the Wild, starring Harrison Ford. A live action version of the beloved novel, Call of the Wild is about a dog who struggles to survive in Alaska after being stolen from his family and sold as a sled dog. Also starring Karen Gillan, Dan Stevens, and Bradley Whitford.

Wendy-February 28, 2020

A reimagining of the J.M. Barrie classic story Peter Pan, Wendy is a fantasy drama about a young girl kidnapped and taken to an island where a mysterious pollen has disrupted the cycles of age and time. It will premiere at the Sundance film festival on January 26, 2020.

The New Mutants-TBD

Marvel’s “X-Men” series is getting a new installment. This time audiences will follow teenage mutants that are being held in a secret facility instead of the usual suspects like Professor X and Magneto. The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga.

The New Mutants Teaser Poster

Scary movie fans, this one’s for you. Antlers stars Keri Russell and Jesse Plemons as a brother and sister duo who find themselves involved in something terrifying with a student who harbors a dark secret. I will not be seeing this one as the trailer is even too much for me.

The Personal History of David Copperfield-TBD

Dev Patel plays David Copperfield in this page-to-screen release of the Charles Dickens novel of the same title. The Personal History of David Copperfield follows the life and adventures of Copperfield from childhood to adulthood. It also stars Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, and Hugh Laurie. It will have a UK release date of January 24, 2020.

The Woman in the Window-TBD

I know I just got done saying I am not in for the creepy thrillers, but I may change my mind for this one. The Woman in the Window stars Amy Adams as a reclusive woman who thinks she sees a murder take place in the adjacent apartment building. It looks intense, but not scary, so I might give it a go in theaters!

Free Guy-December 11, 2020

Ryan Reynolds. Need we say more? Ok, maybe just a little bit. Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds as a character who realizes he is a background player in a video game. I love Ryan Reynolds (yes, even in the monstrosity that was Green Lantern), so I am totally down for this, even if I’m not really into video games.

The Empty Man-August 7, 2020

Another entry into the horror/supernatural category. The Empty Man is based on Vanesa R. Del Rey’s graphic novel of the same name. James Badge Dale will play the lead role of an ex-cop, haunted by the violent death of his wife and son, who tries to find a missing girl.

The King’s Man-September 18, 2020

The third and final installment in The Kingsmen series, The King’s Man will take us back to the origins of the first independent intelligence agency. Starring Harris Dickinson, Gemma Arterton, Ralph Fiennes, and Stanley Tucci, this movie is based on The Secret Service by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

West Side Story-December 18, 2020

Fun fact: I sang “I Feel Pretty” during a choir showcase in high school. That’s my one claim to fame for West Side Story. This new film adaptation will star Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler as Tony and Maria, and it is being directed by Steven Spielberg.

The Last Duel-December 25, 2020

Finally, a limited release of The Last Duel will happen at the end of 2020, but it will be more widely released in 2021. It’s screenplay brings back the writing team of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, and it is being directed by Ridley Scott. The film focuses on a dispute between Knight Jean de Carrouges and his squire that is to be settled by a duel.

New Pixar Movies in 2020

Pixar is getting TWO new movies in 2020. Not remakes. Not sequels. Brand new movies with brand new stories.

Onward-March 6, 2020

Chris Pratt and Tom Holland trade in their superhero powers for a chance at another kind of adventure. Two teenage elf brothers set off on a journey to bring their father back from the dead for 24 hours. Onward will no doubt be full of hilarious hijinks and heartwarming moments if Pixar’s track record is any indication.

Soul-November 20, 2020

Another brand new story debuting in 2020 is Soul. Aspiring jazz musician Joe Gardner, voiced by Jamie Foxx, will take a journey from the “streets of New York City” to the “cosmic realms” to discover the answers to life’s important questions.

Mulan-July 24, 2020

First on the list of live action movies from Disney Studios is Mulan. Unlike the animated version, this iteration of the movie will not have songs or a dragon sidekick for Mulan. Instead, it will more closely follow the true story of Mulan as she takes her father’s place in the war to help save China.

Artemis Fowl-Direct to Disney+

So this film was originally supposed to open in 2019, but it got pushed back in favor of the second Maleficent movie release. Artemis Fowl is a 12 year old genius who is trying to rescue his criminal dad from powerful underground fairies. The movie is based on a popular children’s fantasy novel of the same title.

Jungle Cruise-July 30, 2021

I CANNOT wait for this one! One of my favorite rides at Disney is getting its own movie. Jungle Cruise stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, and it will be complete with the cheesy quotes and hilarious situations from the ride itself!

The One and Only Ivan-August 14, 2020

Based on the book, The One and Only Ivan is about animals owned by a man named Mack who live in cages at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. Ivan, the gorilla, is voiced by Sam Rockwell. Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, and Helen Mirren also provide voices for the animal characters. Bryan Cranston stars as Mack, the owner.

Raya and the Last Dragon-March 21, 2021

In a realm known as Lumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon.

This movie stars the voice of Cassie Steele as Raya and Awkwafina as Sisu. Raya and the Last Dragon is the only movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2020.

New Marvel Movies

Black Widow-November 6, 2020

Finally, finally we are getting our Black Widow movie! Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, the first Marvel movie of 2020 is going to be focused on Natasha Romanoff and her life outside of the Avengers. The film also stars Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh, and David Harbour.

The Eternals-November 6, 2020

The last Marvel movie of 2020 has now been pushed to 2021. The Eternals will not debut in 2020 as previously planned. I don’t know much about this one other than it has a HUGE cast!

Kit Harington, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, and Brian Tyree Henry are just a few of the big names you’ll see in this film. If you need to catch up on your Marvel, here’s what you need to watch before “phase 4” begins this year. I’m excited to see it!
