With Halloween just a few days away, you may be scrambling for some last minute costume ideas for yourself or your kids. One of the easiest ways to get in the spirit this season is by dressing up, but don’t think you need to go all out and scour Pinterest for days to come up with something. Believe it or not, the answer may already be hanging in your closet. Check out these tips for a quick DIY costume that won’t require your left arm or 30 hours in front of a sewing machine!
DIY Citrus Swirl Inspired Costume
Surprise! My DIY costume is Disney-inspired! You didn’t see that one coming, I bet. This one came to me a week or so ago when I was trying to come up with an idea for Neil and I to do together. He isn’t really into dressing up, so I had to convince him that I could make it work. Nothing heavy, nothing fancy, comfort had to be key.
What You’ll Need
The steps to recreating this beauty are easy. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Orange/white striped shirt
- Khaki shorts or pants
- Headband
- Orange and White tulle
- Craft Glue
- Foam circle
- Safety pins
Get Creative
Obviously the main “creative” area of my costume is my headgear. I wasn’t entirely sure everyone would “get” my costume without it, so it just had to be made. I went on a rabbit hole of an internet search trying to find what other folks did (heads up: not a lot out there) and just decided to wing it myself. Tulle is cheap and easy to form into shapes (with the help of craft glue, thank you) so it wasn’t difficult to get the “swirl” started. The most difficult choice was how to layer the tulle, but once I decided on a direction I completed the project in about 10 minutes.

Who says kids are the only ones that can wear a costume during the Halloween season? My friend Tania sure doesn’t think so! She was inspired by her friend Julie to create #BusStopCostumes as a way to help her kids laugh a little and stop taking life so seriously. I love dressing up in costume. I think it’s a fun way to express yourself and a way to step out of your comfort zone and be silly. I may wear this on Halloween night or I may not, but that’s not really the point for me. I had fun creating it, and I hope you’ll have fun creating your costume too!
