The latest installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange, opens in theaters this Friday. Even if you are not a fan of superheroes or comics, I have a feeling this movie will still draw you in a keep you engaged. Stunning visuals, an almost entirely British cast, and gorgeous costumes set the tone and pace of this new film. Curious about who Dr. Strange may be? I had to do a little research myself as he is not what one would consider a “popular” superhero, but I was glad to know he would be sticking around for the pinnacle of the Marvel series, the not-yet-permanently-titled “Infinity War” films. Can you imagine how epic it will be to finally see all of the Marvel superheroes in one film?! Eeeek! My inner fangirl cannot wait!
Who is Doctor Strange?
Producer Kevin Feige explains, “Doctor Strange deals with parallel dimensions, alternate dimensions and the multiverse, which unlocks an entirely new area of storytelling for us. It’s the richness of that Marvel Universe that allows us, on what
will be our 14th film released, to open up this entirely new aspect.”
The story follows world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange, whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place—a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long Strange—armed with newly acquired magical powers—is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
Why You Need to See It
Do I really need to give more reasons than Benedict Cumberbatch? Maybe (but probably not). What if I said Tilda Swinton was in it? Or Rachel McAdams? Or Chiwetel Ejiofor? It really is an all-star cast. If you’re unsure if this film is for you because it doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense, don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’m not a comic book reader, and some of the concepts presented in the trailer seem a little far out, but I don’t mind suspending disbelief when I’m watching a superhero film. I’m going to see it because I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I want to see the subsequent movies that will come after this one.
What People are Saying About It
I had several blogger friends who recently got the chance to sit down with the cast and crew to talk about the movie, and I’ve been blown away by all the interviews I’ve read. You know the movie is going to be a good one when the director says he “made it for his boys” who are “huge fans of Marvel” and that he’s “a movie fan” before he is “a filmmaker.” He gets it, y’all! He gets that the fans want to see a good movie that is true to the universe that’s already been created! Thank you, Scott Derrickson! If you care about what the critics say (eh, take it or leave it in my book), the film has scored a 91% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 72% on Metacritic, and 8/10 on iMDB.
I cannot wait to see this film, and I hope you will go see it too! Doctor Strange is in theaters November 4!
