The 2019 D23 Expo brought us a lot of exciting new information! Specifically, we found out what’s new at Disney Parks, beginning in 2020 and beyond! There were also some controversial announcements about what appears to be a near-total overhaul of everyone’s beloved EPCOT. Let’s dive in to all of the new announcements from this year’s D23 Expo!
New at Disney Parks-D23 2019 Announcements
New Parade at Disneyland
First, let’s talk about our favorite West Coast park. Disneyland is getting a new parade! This parade appears to be a daytime one. No word on how long the Main Street Electrical Parade is sticking around or if we’re ever going to see Paint the Night again.
Magic Happens will feature new floats highlighting Sleeping Beauty, Moana, Coco, and more! It will also have brand new music from Todrick Hall. Magic Happens will be in Disneyland Park in the Spring of 2020.
Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Next, we got an update on the new ride replacing my longtime favorite, “The Great Movie Ride.” Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open in Walt Disney World in 2020 and the Toontown section of Disneyland in 2022. This ride takes guests through a series of Mickey and Minnie cartoon shorts.
Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure
Probably the most anticipated announcement of this expo concerned the new “Marvel Land” that’s been in development for the last few years. Officially named “Avengers Campus,” we found out so much more about what exactly is coming to the new area of Disney California Adventure!
- The first ever Spider-Man attraction in a Disney Park will open on Avengers Campus. Guests will be able to test drive a “web slinger vehicle” and help Spider-Man out.
- Meet and Greets for Doctor Strange, Black Widow, Star-Lord, Gamora, Groot, Black Panther, Dora Milaje, Loki, and Thor.
- A new E-ticket attraction will open in Phase 2 that allows guests to step on the Quinjet and fly to Wakanda!
- First phase of the Avengers Campus will open at Disney California Adventure in 2020!
Walt Disney World Updates
Most of the announcements at the 2019 D23 Expo centered around Walt Disney World. As the biggest of the stateside parks, and also the one with the most to update, it makes sense that WDW would take front and center stage.
Epcot is going to undergo one of the biggest transformations of all in the coming years. Construction has been going on for a while now for the new “Ratatouille” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” rides, but there is EVEN MORE coming! At the D23 Expo, it was announced that four new “neighborhood” names would be assigned to different parts of Epcot to unify the entire park.
World Showcase will remain as is, but get ready for World Nature, World Discovery, and World Celebration. The geodesic sphere containing Spaceship Earth will remain as the park’s icon, but the entrance is getting an update including a new fountain, more greenery, and benches (and all the tired guests’ feet said HALLELUJAH).
Finally, Epcot is getting even more attractions and a new restaurant! Space 220, the new restaurant, will open in 2020 and is accepting reservations starting in December of this year. France and Canada will be getting new films focused on their countries. England will be getting a new Mary Poppins attraction where guests can actually enter 17 Cherry Tree Lane. More play spaces are coming to the park including ones themed after Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and Wreck It Ralph. Lastly, a Moana inspired attraction will be coming to the World Nature neighborhood.
Hotels at WDW
We knew that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios would be getting a new “Star Wars themed” hotel, but now we know its name and purpose!
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will be unlike any hotel experience you’ve ever had before. It will be a minimum 2 night, 2 day stay that will put guests right in the middle of Star Wars storytelling. Light saber training, interactive adventures, food, a trip to Batuu, and a hotel room will all be included in the experience. No word on pricing or when reservations will open just yet.
Continuing to expand their hotel properties, Lakeside Lodge will debut with Disney-themed nature stories as their theme in 2021. A new table service restaurant inspired by The Princess and the Frog will be housed in the new hotel.
50th Anniversary Celebration
Last, but certainly not least, we learned that in honor of the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World, merchandise and food offerings will all take on a rainbow/iridescent hue.
We also learned:
- Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will be opening 2021.
- The Tron coaster in Magic Kingdom will be open.
- The Epcot entrance remodel will be near completion.
- Star Wars: Galactic Star Cruiser will be open.
With all of these amazing announcements, I didn’t really save room to talk about the international parks, but there are some exciting things happening there too! Which announcement excites you the most?
