In case you missed it earlier, I wrote an extensive overview of our recent travels to Memphis, but I left out one teeny, tiny detail: the food. Like all good southern cities, Memphis has a plethora of options when it comes to dining, and, no, we didn’t just eat barbecue (although what we did eat was really, really good). Keep an open mind as you continue to read because this list is by no means an exclusive list (after all, there are only so many times one can stuff one’s face during the vacation).1. Belly AcresBelly Acres is situated in the Overton Square area of downtown Memphis, and they pride themselves in being “citified farm fresh.” Their goal is to bring delicious, sustainable gourmet burgers and toppings to the city direct from their farms. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fun and kid-friendly (a large, climbable tractor sits right in the entryway), and the food is prepared fresh in their kitchen as you order. Neil got the “Dare Ya” and I got the “Voodoo Moo-Moo.”
I wolfed mine down so fast that I didn’t even have a chance to try Neil’s, but he assured me it was delicious. My burger was fresh, the sauteed onions were not soggy, and the sriracha aioli was, literally, the perfect extra kick to an already outstanding burger. They have standard kid fare (chicken strips, burgers, grilled cheese, etc.), so even the pickiest of palates will find something they like at Belly Acres.
2. Huey’sHuey’s is a legendary Memphis staple, and for good reason. It began 45 years ago as a bar and has since transition over into a bar and restaurant combination. It’s a family run business that supports the local economy in Memphis, but even some of the locals think Huey’s is a “chain” because it now has 8 locations all over Memphis and its surrounding suburbs. I got the Smokey Melt Burger and Neil got the West Coast Burger.
I love me a good patty melt, and the one I ate at Huey’s definitely satisfied. Never would I ever have thought guacamole on a burger would be delicious, but it totally was. Also, get the onion rings. You will thank me later.Oh, and what am I doing here? Apparently it’s a “thing” in Huey’s to shoot toothpicks at the ceiling and see if they stick. Quite fun and possibly a little dangerous. Don’t knock it till you try it!3. Charlie Vergo’s RendezvousCaroline is obsessed with “Man vs. Food” on the Travel Channel (thanks Netflix), so it was an absolute must for us to go here (even though it’s supposedly touristy, I have it on good authority that even the locals still love it after all these years). Memphis-style barbecue is slightly different that in that it is a vinegar base with a dry rub seasoning, but that doesn’t stop their ribs from being packed full of flavor and covered with that great smokey taste that all well-cooked ribs have. I’m glad Caroline talked us into going because it would’ve been a shame not to at least try it. I ordered the pork shoulder sandwich, and Neil ordered the large plate of ribs to share with Caroline, and there was plenty to go around for everyone.Since 1948, Rendezvous has been grillin’ up ribs in their alley restaurant in downtown Memphis, and I don’t see them stopping anytime soon.
Because our weekend was so short, we didn’t have too many opportunities to try all the great eats Memphis has to offer, so I know I probably missed a few. What are your favorite local eats in Memphis?
